Shane Niksic was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and six-time NCAA Division II championships qualifier (five track, one cross-country). He finished seventh in the 1500m at the 2015 NCAA Division II championships.
How he came to Austin TC: Shane Niksic
Shane Niksic is the only athlete in Austin Track Club history to include a link to Runner’s World in his application package. Normally this would be immediately disqualifying on a variety of grounds. In Niksic’s case, though, it worked heavily in his favor.
Nick Weldon wrote about the trend among NCAA athletics departments eliminating their cross-country and track & field programs. As a counter, Weldon highlighted the then-year old team at Colorado Mesa University. And you cannot highlight the CMU Mavericks’ early years without talking about Shane Niksic.
Niksic graduated high school reluctantly accepting his competitive track career was over. Having created the opportunity to build the program at Colorado Mesa, he was not willing to let his career end upon graduation.
The combination of the club, the city and childhood friends living nearby clinched the deal for Niksic. He drove his beloved Jeep from Colorado to Austin in August 2015, and embraced the novelty of living at sea level.
Outside, beyond and after track
Niksic has a range of ambitions beyond the track, including competitive mountain running, becoming a collegiate coach, owning an apiary and having a wilderness-themed survival show.
